Joyce, quando abitò a Trieste dal 1904 al 1920, si guadagnò da vivere insegnando inglese alla Berlitz School e in seguito dando lezioni private ad allievi ed allieve appartenenti all’establishment cittadino. Il suo charme di insegnante seppe legarlo d’amicizia (e non solo) ad alcuni dei suoi discenti, come nel caso dello scrittore triestino Italo Svevo (e dell’ispiratrice di Giacomo Joyce). Nel 1913 Joyce cominciò a lavorare alla Scuola Superiore di Commercio “Revoltella” (un’istituzione che sarebbe divenuta l’Università di Trieste), e lì rimase fino all’entrata dell’Italia nella prima guerra mondiale, un incarico poi ripreso dal 1919 al 1920, quando tornò da Zurigo. Questo libro, che ha testi a fronte in italiano e in inglese, è un’ampia ricostruzione della sua attività come tutor e professore universitario, di cui sono analizzati i metodi originali, e talvolta bizzarri, di insegnamento.

During his stay in Trieste between 1904-1920, Joyce earned his living as an English teacher at the Berlitz School and, subsequently, by giving private lessons to students drawn from the Triestine establishment. His charme as a teacher enabled him to form friendships (and not only) with some of his students, such as the Triestine writer Italo Svevo (and the young woman who would inspire Giacomo Joyce). In 1913, Joyce began teaching at the Scuola Superiore di Commercio “Revoltella” (which would later become the University of Trieste), remaining there until Italy’s entry into the First World War in 1915, and then reassuming his position in 1919 and 1920, after his return from Zurich. The present volume, in which the English translation appears alongside the Italian original, is an ample reconstruction of Joyce’s activities as a private tutor and university professor, and analyses his original and, at times, bizarre teaching methods.
